Ivep Intercultural 2

Intercultural Communication assignment :
1.       Do you recall from your childhood how you learned aspects of non-verbal language (space, gesture, etc) ?
Answer : The first means for someone to recognize nonverbal communication is family, especially a mother, she will teach us how to communicate well, nonverbal communication is usually a tradition that has been carried out for generations. I grew up in Javanese culture so when I was child, I have been taught when talking to older people, the body is slightly bent and is forbidden to look into their eyes because it is considered impolite.

2.       Are there any expressions or proverbs in your language that say something about nonverbal communication?
Answer : Yes there is any proverbs especially in Java, for the example is “Kemaladheyan Ngajak Sempal”. The Javanese proverb above literally means the parasite invites broken. This proverb in Javanese society is intended as a form of advice or satire for people who are hitching someone, but the person who hitches is actually causing disturbance, loss, and even bankruptcy for the people they drive.

3.       What kind of impressions do people form of one another based on nonverbal behavior ? ( e.g., “I don’t trust him because he stares at people.” ) ?
Answer : When foreigners see the behavior of Javanese people, maybe they will definitely say "why don't you look at me? do I disturb your view? it's very impolite."

4.       What should a foreigner learn about nonverbal  communication in your country before going there?
Answer : The first thing they need to learn is about gestures, behavior,  and Javanese culture. because the Javanese are very thick with tradition and culture and Javanese are very fond of greeting guests or people they have just met. They like to smile and are very polite.
